Hi Kevin,
Yes voltage spacing has been a concern of mine. I just checked the PCB design threads earlier today at your recommendation, useful info and it tracks pretty well with the results I get from an online IPC spacing calculator, possibly a little more conservative.
That is really good to know wrt drill bits. The HSS bits I was using were definitely not lasting hundreds of holes, so presumably that's all the wobble with the hand drill doing them in. Based on that, I picked up a used drill press today that I have been stalking for the past several weeks. Gave it a whirl with my sharp new TiN bit, and all of a sudden I'm taking seconds to drill a hole, not a minute plus like I was with the hand-drill and HSS. Run-out is also much improved, the holes are now tight enough for the eyelets to hang in them after insertion and before rolling, so that'll make assembly quicker and easier as well. Who knew better tools would give better results... Thanks for the pointers to the right stuff!
Tomorrow I see a man about a used dake arbor press. Fingers crossed!
