I've been using Eagle 6.3 for quite a while now and overall it has been working fine.
I was curious about Eagle-9, which is the latest-greatest as of a year or so ago. It is a huge piece of bloatware. You cannot own it and must pay a yearly subscription to use it. Worse than that, the computer it is on has to be connected to the internet for you to be able to use it !!!
All the billionaire tech owners want everyone to eventually go to "cloud computing". Your device would have a thin-web browser, like Google Chrome but maybe even thinner? All of your files and anything you write or draw would be on someone else's server - the "cloud" - where security would be out of your hands and essentially be nonexistent. You would not be able to save anything locally inside your device - not a computer anymore, just a generic device. And the big bonus is that everyone would have to pay a subscription to be able to do anything at all.
People using the cloud today are naive. They do not realise that they have relinquished privacy and security and have had options removed for them to choose. Choice diminishes with each new "improvement" of computing tech.
In this regard I am very old school. I have no subscription software. I do not stream entertainment files or music. My important work is done on an offline computer - writing, creating electronic designs, customer data and invoicing. My online computer has a physical switch to disconnect the ethernet connection when I want it to be offline - software switches are not reliable. Maybe it is a generational thing, but I have friends who have fallen into the swipey device cloud void, so maybe it is more a style of what is convenient or what seems secure?
