Thanks for the reply to my question. That was very enlightening. After reading the TUT series I started using custom made toroidal power transformers in many of my amps and have been really pleased with the results. The lower weight is big plus for me, and it allow me to get heavier heater wirings and separate bias windings.
I think I need to do what you suggested and try EI's and Toroidal OT side by side to really hear the result. I rarely play really loudly so I want the quieter settings to be sound as similar as possible to the louder sounds. More and more of the players I know are moving to playing more quietly and trying to get good tone at reasonable levels.
Probably the most daunting thing will be to find a producer that will really work with me. I've had trouble getting custom transformers built and it seems that expertise in vacuum tube audio transformers is few and far between.
